1572: create your own nucleus slicer DIY

DIY means Do It Yourself and it is something that appeals to so many people, including me. In this video our guest surgeon uses a needle to first create a cystotome to perform the capsulorhexis and then he transforms it into a nucleus slicer to pre-chop the cataract into smaller quadrants. We have shown other techniques of pre-chop such as using a cannula/chopper combo, two choppers, or a dedicated instrument. Here, a chopper and the bent needle tip are used together to slice the nucleus into quadrants. While I don’t think that I will routinely use this technique, I like the ingenuity and the thinking. Plus the MacGyver aspect is pretty cool.
