
There is some resistance among surgeons to learn a new technique because of the learning curve. For surgeons who are doing divide and conquer, it is a good technique, but I assure you that if you learn phaco chop, you’ll never go back. This video shows a resident learning to do phaco chop but instead of starting with chopping, the resident does a 4 quadrant divide and conquer technique first and then performs phaco chop on each quadrant (making it two 1/8 pieces). The advantage here is that there is no downside because if the chop is not successful, each quadrant can simply be emulsified in the standard divide-and-conquer method.
