The happiest patients after cataract surgery are the ones who achieve results that meet or exceed their expectations. Of course, we want to improve our surgical skill and use the best technologies to produce the best visual results. But we also need to set reasonable patient expectations. Our man-made lens implants are great, but nothing can return us to the amazing vision we had in our youth. Our IOLs that address presbyopia are great but they do not return us to 8 diopters of accommodation. Look at my grey hair (and grey beard stubble) and you instantly I personally know all about presbyopia! I’m just thankful that I’m mildly myopic so that my near vision is still excellent. How do we talk to patients about reasonable expectations? And which two types of eyes tend to be the toughest in regards to meeting lofty expectations?
