There is a good reason that the most commonly learned initial technique for nucleo-fractis is the divide and conquer method. It is safe and reliable and suitable for beginner surgeons because it removes the pressure of time. When we are performing phaco chop, there is a small window of time in which to accomplish the chop before the vacuum holding power on the nucleus is lost. There is no such time limitation for divide and conquer and this is one of the reasons that it is preferred by beginners. Our guest surgeon here is in Europe and this is case number 80 in the training program. The technique is good and at this point the surgeon is ready to move to stop and chop. If you are a resident in training this case is right about in the middle of the bell curve of surgical skills for a resident with 60 to 100 cases completed.
