2615: dense white cataract with femto laser

Image showing a dense white cataract being evaluated for treatment with a femtosecond laser. The left side displays a graphical representation of the cataract, while the right side shows an OCT imaging scan. Text questions the effectiveness of laser light energy penetrating the opaque cataract.

Our guest surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to help with cataract surgery on a dense white cataract. The question is how well the laser light energy will penetrate the opaque lens cataract? Can you use the femtosecond laser to help divide the nucleus or soften it? Patients see the word “laser” and they think that is is magic and better. But we, as ophthalmologists, know that is simply not the case. There is no magic in the laser and I would ALWAYS prefer a highly skilled surgeon over a less skilled surgeon who relied on the laser to get by. I am sure that you agree.
