2448: resident case 200 evaluation

This is cataract case 200 for this young surgeon in training and it is a pretty good procedure. Certainly there are some challenges as you can see from the title photo showing iris prolapse through the main incision. Remember that as surgeons we are committing to lifelong learning, especially with cataract surgery which takes years to learn and then a lifetime to master. At case 200 you should be well on your way to becoming a competent cataract surgeon and you will continue to improve over the next few years in practice. If you can complete 200 cataract cases in your residency, that is perfectly fine and doing more than this over additional years of training may not be the right balance. There are countries where registrars/residents did 6 or 7 years of ophthalmology training with 1000+ cataract surgeries but this was done at the expense of being able to start your practice years earlier. Generally, residents/registrars are paid very little in comparison to the value they provide because they are thought to be accepting lower remuneration in exchange for hands-on learning. Perhaps that model needs to change. Watch this case and comment below to give advice for improvement.
