2206: why not use the laser for incisions?

This patient is having cataract surgery with the assistance of the femtosecond laser. The surgeon has elected to use the femto laser to create the anterior capsular opening and to divide the nucleus, but not to make the main incision or paracentesis. Why not? As we have learned, the femtosecond laser uses thousands of tiny spots to create the incision which leaves it with a somewhat cobblestone surface. This is significantly rougher than an incision made with a steel keratome and far inferior to an incision made with a diamond keratome such as shown in yesterday’s video. When you use the femtosecond laser are you using it to make your main phaco incision? Please comment below.

  1. Hello
I use Ziemer Z8 femto to do my cataracts surgeries. At the begining my incisions werent good, sometimes they were to anterior to the limbus or not complete to the anterior chamber.
After months of trying diferents settings, i am having a very good quality incisions and i feel Femto is helping me in the cataract procedure.
    Thank you
