Our guest surgeon, Val Apostolov MD, has been featured on CataractCoach many times before. He is an innovative surgeon who is always looking to improve surgical techniques. In this video, he shows us how can can fashion a sharp pre-chopper from a 25g needle and then use it to mechanically split a nucleus into halves and then quadrants prior to inserting the phaco probe into the eye. We have previously featured other pre-chop techniques, many of which do not require any special instrumentation. At the end of this video, I also show a clip of how I split the nucleus for a novice surgeon using just a chopper and the 27g cannula from your viscoelastic syringe.
