Cataract with Silicone Oil Removal

Our guest surgeon is Willie Kan, MBBS from Malaysia and he is showing the technique of combined cataract surgery with silicone oil removal. The patient had a prior pars plana vitrectomy for complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and then silicone oil placed to tamponade the retina. Now, many months later, the patient needs cataract surgery and removal of the silicone oil. Instead of making incisions in the pars plana to drain the silicone oil, it can be removed through the phaco incision after a posterior capsulorhexis is created.
