Cataract Surgeons are Refractive Surgeons

Cataract surgeons are certainly refractive surgeons and we can correct large degrees of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism during our lens-based procedures. We can even address presbyopia, though truly accommodating IOLs are still in the works. We have covered many refractive topics here such as IOL calculations, toric IOLs, limbal relaxing incisions, astigmatic effect of the phaco incision, and even choosing post-op refractive targets.

But we must also emphasize that a comprehensive refractive cataract surgeon should also be well-versed in corneal refractive procedures such as LASIK, PRK, and more. This is a video of me doing all laser LASIK using the Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser for the corneal flap and then the Wavelight Allegretto excimer laser for the stromal ablation.
