2574: Equalizing Surgical Education

A virtual discussion featuring Dr. David Pérez González on equalizing surgical education, emphasizing access to knowledge for all surgeons. The image includes on-screen text and branding from the Cataract Coach.

One of the challenges facing the next generation of surgeons is access to great surgical education. Different countries have varying levels of requirements for residency training and there are places where surgical education can be lacking in some regards. In the past this was quite a challenge and surgeons from around the world would go to large national and international meetings (like AAO and ASCRS for our USA colleagues) to learn in person. At this past ASCRS meeting in April 2025 in Los Angeles, I was surprised to see such low attendance. This may be in large part because of the widespread availability of great learning materials online. For our two sister channels, CataractCoach.com and RetinaRounds.com, we are committed to equalizing surgical education by teaching all of the secrets, tips, and tricks for ophthalmic surgery of the anterior and posterior segment. I recently spoke with Dr David Pérez González from the EyeSite Academy Podcast https://www.youtube.com/@EyesiteAcademy about this important topic. Here is a brief clip from that podcast. Please check out the full podcast as well.
