2331: YAG laser vitreous floater treatment

On our CataractCoach Podcast yesterday, we had a discussion with Dr Inder Paul Singh about dealing with vitreous floaters and he detailed his use of the YAG laser to break up floaters (this video) and also a 27g vitrectomy system (tomorrow’s video). Watching this video, it appears that the YAG laser can indeed break up a larger floater like a Weiss ring caused by a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). But is that sufficient? And is it reasonable to put hundreds of YAG laser shots into the vitreous? Is there a risk of retinal damage? Would you do this for your own eyes? Please comment below.

  1. The retina can be damaged. If the particle is not “hit”, even with the truncated energy source, there will be more posterior transmission of energy.
