2304: bimanual phaco surgery

Many surgeons are believers in bimanual irrigation and aspiration for cortex removal. And retina surgeons almost always use a separate infusion and aspiration lines. So why do we do coaxial phaco for nucleus removal? Would it be better to do bimanual phaco as well? About 15 years ago, bimanual phaco had a surge in popularity and even I tried it for a few months. There are distinct advantages to having a separate infusion line by means of an irrigating chopper. Our guest surgeon, who was featured on our podcast two days ago, is strong proponent of bimanual phaco and this video shows why. So why didn’t I continue with bimanual phaco? Answer in the video.
