2163: total ocular reconstruction

This is a very complex case in a monocular patient who presents to you with a dislocated IOL and capsular bag complex and a failed corneal graft. The patient also had a prior scleral buckle placed for a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment many years ago. Our guest surgeon, Dr Steven Safran, is an expert at these tough cases and he performs total ocular reconstruction in one sitting: pars plana vitrectomy to retrieve the dropped IOL, an IOL explant/exchange, Yamane ISHF of a new IOL, and then a penetrating keratoplasty (PKP corneal transplant). This case takes time and the recovery can also be prolonged. The patient achieved a great visual outcome and everything was completed at the same time. Truly an amazing case.
