2104: understanding vertical chop

The most common request from CataractCoach fans is guidance for learning phaco chop. Yes, your divide and conquer and your stop and chop techniques are good, but yet you still desire to learn phaco chop. And there is a good reason: phaco chop is more efficient and a better technique, plus it is so much fun. You CAN learn this technique and the first step is understanding the difference between vertical chop (today’s video) and horizontal chop (tomorrow’s video). If you currently do not perform phaco chop, please leave a comment below and tell me about the barriers and how I can help.

  1. Dear dr Devgan, beautiful video! Do you know which chopper was used in this video? It seems a little bit longer and narrower than the Koch chopper I use and I feel the Koch chopper sometimes is too short in very dens cataracts. I have been looking for the right chopper for a while. This one seems pretty good!

  2. I have watched the videos and tried to chop but I don’t feel I can hold the vacuum and get my chopper in to propagate a full chop. If I slightly tilt the nucleus out and pre-place my chopper behind the nucleus I can get a horizontal chop but I’d like to be able to do this in the bag as well.
