This can happen we are using high pressure to deliver fluids through a small bore cannula and while a Luer lock can help, it is no guarantee. In this video we show how to properly hold a syringe with a cannula to prevent this iatrogenic complication. Such an important video to watch!
This is a very important topic. I tell young surgeons that when they are handed any cannula in the O.R., as a reflex they should turn the luer lock cannula to the right to tighten it first before they do anything else….just like zipping up your fly as you leave the bathroom….even if it’s zipped check it again right before you walk out. 99.9% of the time you give it a twist and it doesn’t budge because it’s already tight but I always check it by giving a twist….every single time. Surgeons should do this as a reflex movement.
