2070: cataract from electrocution / electric shock

Electrocution is very dangerous and can lead to instant death. In cases where the victim survives, there can be severe damage to many parts of the body. This patient received a very high voltage and high current electric shock which caused him to lose his left arm. It also caused this left eye white cataract while the patient’s right eye is totally normal with 20/20 vision. The high electrical current can instantly damage, denature, and cook the delicate proteins that make up the crystalline lens. This patient has a white cataract but if you look carefully, you will also notice focal spots of congealed proteins that are adherent to the lens capsule. The challenge in this case will be performing the capsulorhexis. Fortunately, our guest surgeon is an expert and is able to deliver a great outcome for this patient.
