1782: resident week: cystotome rhexis

The simple bent needle, also called a cystotome (or cystitome for the alternate spelling) can be used to create the capsulorhexis (or capsulorrhexis, alternate spelling) via a small paracentesis incision. This requires careful control so that the friction of the capsule flap against the sharp needle tip is what holds the capsule during tearing. The results can be very good as shown in this case. This is a technique that all cataract surgeons should master and it is easily practiced.
