The new generation of diffractive trifocal IOLs such as the Alcon PanOptix and the J&J Tecnis Synergy are able to provide our patients with very good vision across the three primary ranges of vision: distance vision (2 meters to far away), intermediate vision (about 1 meter away), and near vision (about 0.5 meters in front of the eyes). While these two IOL designs have some differences, they are both able to provide this wide range of vision without spectacles. There are some important biometric considerations and patients should have measurements that are compatible with success for these trifocal IOLs. This video explains some of the considerations that are important in patient selection.
