In the USA we have had access to some trifocal IOLs for the last couple of years. During that time many patients in our clinic have benefitted from this technology. But there are limitations and it is important to set appropriate patient expectations. There are even some patients where we have to return to the operating room to explant the trifocal IOL and replace it with a monofocal IOL. Overall, however, the results have been excellent — for the right patients. This video explains the pearls that we have learned over the past few years. Today in the USA we have the Alcon PanOptix and the J&J Tecnis Synergy which have somewhat different technical designs, but both provide spectacle-free vision for three focal ranges (hence, trifocal): distance (1 meter to far away), intermediate (0.5 to 1 meter range), and near (closer than 0.5m).
