2760: standing Ahmed glaucoma valve

An image showing a surgical procedure involving the placement of a standing Ahmed Glaucoma Valve, with notes on the patient's position and details about the surgery.

This patient has multiple systemic medical issues and cannot lie supine for ophthalmic surgery. In this case the patient needs an Ahmed glaucoma valve surgery to help control the intra-ocular pressure of glaucoma. This makes it very challenging because the surgeon must do this case while the patient is seated and only partially reclined. And that means that the surgeon has to operate while standing which is unusual for ophthalmologists because we typically sit down so that we can use both feet with our foot pedals. If you are a resident and you’re considering doing a glaucoma / complex anterior segment fellowship then you should really look into working with Dr Ramesh Ayyala at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
