Close-up of an eye undergoing pterygium excision with autograft, highlighting careful dissection and conjunctival graft placement. An arrow points to corneal distortion.

Part of being a great cataract surgeon is having the skills to do all types of anterior segment surgery including pterygium. While during our residency training a pterygium surgery is seen as a more basic surgery for the junior residents, it is actually a very nuanced procedure. The difference between a good pterygium surgery and a great one is in the details, especially when it comes to performing the auto-graft of conjunctiva. This video shows a beautiful technique (edited to be just a few minutes of watching time) that will serve you and your patients well. What is your preferred technique in these cases of pterygium? Please comment below. By the way, if you’re a beginning surgeon learning pterygium surgery, be sure you know the Spiral of Tillaux!
