2978: Flush and Crush Phaco Technique

Our guest surgeon demonstrates the “flush and crush” technique, which serves as a highly efficient supracapsular variation of the classic tilt and tumble technique. This method is specifically optimized for softer lens nuclei which can be common in some geographic areas in the USA. Outside of the USA, this may be seen as less than ideal for the higher density cataract nuclei. By safely prolapsing the nucleus out of the capsular bag and into the anterior chamber, the surgeon can emulsify the lens material further away from the posterior capsule. This approach minimizes the mechanical stress placed on the zonular apparatus and significantly reduces the risk of a posterior capsule rupture. Watch how fluidics and specific instrument positioning are used to efficiently flip and break down the lens material safely. What are your thoughts on using supracapsular techniques for softer cataracts versus traditional in the bag phacoemulsification methods? Please comment your opinions and preferred techniques below.
