If you are still a beginning surgeon or a resident surgeon, there may be a tendency to use pupil expansion rings or iris hooks more often than you truly need. Certainly, for truly small pupil cases, the pupil rings are useful devices and they can make the surgery easier for you to perform. But when the pupil is about 5mm in diameter, I assure you, a pupil ring is not needed even for surgeons in training. You do not want to get used to having a crutch just to maintain a sense of false safety. Think about it, this pupil is 5 mm in diameter and the standard pupil ring will expand that to 6.25 mm in diameter. That’s really not a big difference.
