A complication during surgery can be a mistake or it can be a lesson. The difference between them is that you learn from the lesson. In residency, a concerted effort must be made to learn from every case that you perform so that you are constantly improving. And in fact, this carries on even beyond residency and I still have this approach to my own surgeries.

He shows many of the important lessons that he learned during residency training. This is the mark of future expert surgeon and shows the pursuit of excellence.
