In the course of giving lectures across the USA and around the world, I meet many experienced ophthalmologists who find it challenging to learn phaco chop. One key difference between phaco chop and other methods of nuclear division is the time factor. The chopping action must be performed within a short window of time (usually just 1 or 2 seconds) while the phaco probe is able to maintain a high-vacuum hold on the nucleus.
This video is shown in slow-motion to help explain this issue and assist with coordination of the movements. I am convinced that all cataract surgeons can learn phaco chop and this video will certainly help in this regard.
