Advice for young ophthalmologists for future success

Today we celebrate our 500th post with keen advice for young doctors.

We did it. We have published a cataract surgery teaching post every day for the last 500 consecutive days. It was not easy. There were vacations, family obligations, professor duties, and a seemingly endless number of patients desiring surgery. There were even wildfires last fall in Los Angeles which forced evacuation from my home for 5 days. Still, we did not miss a single day. And that’s my first bit of advice for young ophthalmologists who wish to maximize their career success: work hard, harder than you ever thought, and be determined to succeed.

By published a video every day, we have shown that Just a few minutes a day is all it takes to sharpen surgical skills and deliver better outcomes for patients. And at the end of the day, it is all about the patients: we want to give them the very best and that means that we need to perform our very best,

This video is full of the best advice that I have for young ophthalmologists who are just starting their long careers. The advice is sage and the insight is keen, but there is no substitute for drive, determination, and plain old hard work.

  2. Congratulations, Uday Devgan.

I watch your videos daily and they have been of great help in my surgeries.

I am an ophthalmologist in one of the poorest states in Brazil, in the Amazon region, where our resources are very scarce.

I would like to thank you for your efforts and generosity in sharing your videos.

May the Lord bless you more and more.

  3. Its been a real joy to watch your videos. I personally have learnt a lot from them. Your videos not only influence the surgical skills of young ophthalmologist in US but they have a global impact. Thank you for sharing your surgical skills and congratulations for your 500 th post in a row.

  4. Sir following and copying your surgical phaco technique even your phaco parameters as displayed in overlay videos I mastered phaco especially flip and chop and today am able to perform phaco in most complicated cataract cases with ease. It was really very helpful when you couriered me a CD of your surgical videos to my relative in US. That CD gave me enough confidence to start doing phaco flip and chop when I was just starting phaco in my private practice in 2005-06 and was low in confidence. I even transformed Sinskey hook to use as chopper for phaco flip & chop as yours.
You have exceptional zeal for teaching. Keep doing the good work.
Thanks for teaching and increasing the confidence that you can do it.
