Sometimes when we perform phaco chop, the lens does not fully divide. The chop scores and partially splits the nucleus, but it does not full propagate throughout the cataract. We can opt to perform more chopping techniques in order to try again, or we can use our chopper and phaco probe to help fully separate these hemi-nucleus fragments.
The technique shown here uses the phaco probe and the chopper to bring up and twist one half of the nucleus so that the two halves can be fully separated. Remember that the chopper can do much more than just chop — it can be used as a manipulator inside the eye to push and pull cataract fragments.
